Leisure in Almeria
Alcazaba of Almeria
Built in the 11th century, this Moorish fortress was captured by the Spanish forces during the reunification by Ferdinand and Isabella.
Cabo de Gata's
Almeria's coastal landscape changes dramatically as you pass from one end to the other.

The stretch of land between Granada and Almeria is mostly taken up with agriculture, and the occasional wildlife oasis. The lakes in the Albuferas de Adra Natural Reserve attract all kinds of spectacular aquatic birds. Head east and you'll notice a remarkable change in the landscape as you get closer to Cabo de Gata...

The Cabo de Gata - Nijar Natural Park is the first marine-terrestrial Natural Park in Andalusia.

It has one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich coastal strips in the whole of the western Mediterranean. It extends for over 34,000 hectares and has a a marine strip of one 12,000 hectares in width.

The park has a long rugged coastline. It's covered with idyllic bays and isolated beaches. Some of them can only be reached by foothpath.

Cabo de Gata has one of Andalucia's most dramatic coastlines. A lot of the park is made up of volcanic rocky mountains that plunge directly into the sea below. It's quite spectacular to look at.

San Miguel del Cabo de Gata is the first village you'll come to if you're coming from Almeria direction. It's close to Salinas del Cabo de Gata - a saltwater lagoon with exceptional bird life.

The next village is San Jose. It's the largest in the park. To the north you'll find the small resorts of Las Negras, La Isleta del Moro and Agua Amarga.
Visit Mojacar

Mojacar is truly spectacular - an absolute must see. It's an ancient Moorish fortress town that stands on a huge rock overlooking the pristine beaches and sparkling waters of the Mediteranean.

Apparently, Walt Disney ws born here, Back in the 1960s Mojacar was like a ghost town. Most of the area's inhabitants had moved to Barcelona region and further afield to find work in the factories. In an effort to attract new residents, the town?s mayor gave land away to anyone who promised to build on it. Within a year the town became a thriving art colony.

Later, the tourists followed. Visitors from all over Europe and beyond flocked to Mojacar, drawn by its stunning natural beauty, excellent beaches and rugged charm. The years that followed saw the development of Mojacar's shoreline, with many hotels and villas being built. Nowadays, most of its foreign residents come from Europe; the majority are British.

Although, Mojacar has now become the largest tourist resort on the Costa Almeria, thankfully it still retains most of its original character. Don't miss the Moorish fortress called El Torreaon or the Arch of Luciana; both fantastic structures, which will literally transport you back in time. There's a maze of narrow, whitwashed streets that all seem to lead you to an amazing view out over the sparkling Mediterranean below
